Clowns, aerial acts, animals of all sorts, and the brave tight rope walkers please the crowd. But Canopy broadens to include the allusive inspiration of the star misfits and nature's misunderstood. Canopy considers the circus from the inside out as the performer rather than the spectator. Centered on the drudgeries of self image and acceptance, it transcends the canopy to mock it's pretentious motives to enclose. Canopy has captured the real "soul" of the circus; a family that understands and encourages it's own. Transparent in it's orchestration, Canopy is a lighter departure. The use of many different wind articulations such as trills and tongue flutters gives life to key moments. The waltz-like rhythm reveals Canopy's playful nature while darker and more subdued passages ponder serious concerns. Small in both scale and duration; the work creatively satisfies. Although Canopy tips it's hat to Stravinsky and R. Strauss, it makes no apologies and takes the bow. |
