[vol.i] : misery made beautiful

[v. VESPERTINE]

He set the earth on its foundations,
so that it should never be moved.
- Psalm 104:5
*

"There is an almost martial sub-theme to all of this, as if the nightly goings on in nature are as rhythmic and planned as an army at full march...".
 -Wildy Haskell

While caught by it's own active imagination and nature's mysterious design,Vespertine is a quick romantic sketch of a true intrinsic masterpiece.
The script for Vespertine includes a role for the unique contra bassoon. The trombone's "glissando-like" sliding effect made it's presence known with an awkward utterance. Tremolos, tongue flutters, trills, and a palette of percussion interact and help to support main themes and drive the performance forward. Vespertine uses a 5/4 time signature and gradual drops in tempo for rhythmic interest.

Overall, Vespertine is a "short story" in length but adequately entertaining to perform on opening night.
